Gnome Lambda (80 hp)

An improved version of the original Omega of 1908, the Lambda also increased displacement from 8 to almost 12 liters and output from 50 to 80 hp. The Lambda was introduced in 1912 and also marketed as the "80 hp".
The concept of the rotary engine was that (unlike the radial engine) the propeller was bolted firmly to the engine which rotated as a unit around a stationary crankshaft. The torque generated tended to make aircraft powered by rotary engines tricky to fly.
